A Plain-English Guide to Jamaica Customs Duties
Nobody wants a surprise bill when they show up to collect a package. Here's exactly how Jamaica Customs duties work, in plain language.
What actually triggers a duty charge?
Jamaica Customs assesses duty based on the total declared/invoice value of a shipment — not its weight, not what it looks like, and not whether it was a gift. Any single shipment valued at US$100 or more may attract duties and GCT (General Consumption Tax). Shipments under that threshold generally clear as duty-free under what's called the "De Minimis" allowance.
Who sets the rate — MGR or Customs?
Jamaica Customs, not MGR. The duty rate depends on the category of item (electronics, clothing, cosmetics, etc.) and is set entirely by Jamaican customs regulations. MGR's shipping charges are separate and are shown to you before duties are even calculated, so you always know which part of the bill is freight and which part is duty.
What do the customs status labels mean?
If you've tracked a package before, you've probably seen one of these labels. Here's what each one means:
- De Minimis — the shipment qualifies for duty-free clearance because its declared value is below the US$100 threshold.
- Arrived at Destination — your package has landed in Jamaica and is queued in the secure customs depot to begin clearance.
- Entry — your customs declaration has been compiled and is awaiting assessment and release by customs officers.
How is duty actually calculated?
Once a shipment clears the US$100 threshold, Jamaica Customs applies duty and GCT based on the declared value and the tariff classification of the item. Because rates vary by item category and can change, MGR doesn't publish a single flat "duty rate" — instead, your MGR dashboard calculator gives an indicative estimate before your package lands, so you're not caught off guard.
Can I dispute or reduce a duty assessment?
Duty assessments are made by Jamaica Customs, not MGR — if you believe an assessment is incorrect, that's handled directly with Customs. What MGR can do is make sure your declared value and paperwork are accurate and submitted promptly, so clearance isn't delayed on our end.
